I spent two semesters abroad and deliberately tried both Airbnb long-stays and traditional student housing in different cities. Compiled all my costs with receipts. The results surprised me -- it is not as simple as one being cheaper. Sharing the full breakdown city by city.

Can confirm the Prague numbers. My dorm room at Charles University was 220 euros per month including internet and utilities. The building was from the 1970s and the shower pressure was questionable, but at that price I genuinely did not care.

The Amsterdam section understates how bad it is. I spent six weeks in a hostel because DUWO had no rooms and every Airbnb monthly stay was either unavailable or over 1400 euros. Start your housing search the second you get your acceptance letter.

Unite Students in London is factory-processed student housing but it works. You get a bed, a desk, internet, and a social environment. Is it exciting? No. Does it solve the housing problem reliably? Yes. Sometimes boring and reliable is exactly what you need.

Vienna's OeAD housing is genuinely excellent for the price. My room was 380 euros, furnished, central, and the application was processed in two weeks. The Austrian system is far more organized than what I experienced trying to find housing in Barcelona the year before.

The hybrid strategy is exactly what I did. Booked an Airbnb for three weeks in Neukolln, found a WG room through WG-Gesucht in person, and moved in on day 22. Could never have found that room from abroad -- the landlord wanted to meet tenants face to face.

Sharing this with my advisees immediately. The hidden cost breakdown is what most students miss entirely. The Anmeldung issue in Germany alone has caused problems for three students in my program this year who booked Airbnbs assuming they could register.

KKIK in Copenhagen assigned me a room in Norreport area for 650 euros. Not cheap by any standard except Copenhagen standards. The social aspect of living with other students made it worth every krone though.

Lived in university halls (term 1), private rental (term 2), and Airbnb (summer). The private rental was cheapest, halls were most social, Airbnb was most comfortable but most expensive. Your priority determines the right choice.

One thing to add: Canadian and American students should check if their home university has bilateral housing agreements with the host institution. UBC had a direct arrangement with my Berlin host university that bypassed the Studentenwerk waitlist entirely.
