Organising our third group trip and we had the Airbnb vs hostel debate AGAIN. Decided to actually run the numbers this time instead of just arguing. Posting the full breakdown here — our conclusion surprised us. Lisbon: nearly identical cost. Amsterdam: hostel wins. Krakow: Airbnb wins on space. Happy to share the spreadsheet if anyone wants it!

The kitchen math is SO real. We've booked Airbnbs three times promising ourselves we'd cook and we never once used the kitchen properly. Hostels are just more honest for party trips.

Generator in Lisbon is incredible for the social vibe. The rooftop bar is wild. Would never have met the people we did in an Airbnb.

Don't sleep on Booking.com apartments — literally the same apartments as Airbnb sometimes but without the service fee. Found a Krakow flat 20% cheaper than the Airbnb listing.

Good point on Booking.com — I should have included that. The service fee gap is significant on shorter stays. Updating my spreadsheet!

Private hostel room is genuinely the underrated option. You get the hostel bar and social stuff but your own door. Game changer for groups who want best of both worlds.
