I have landed in over 30 airports as a student and the single biggest waste of money every time is the airport-to-city transfer if you do not plan it in advance. Compiled my best strategies for 15 major study abroad cities. The savings are real -- we are talking 20 to 80 dollars per trip compared to a taxi.

The Piccadilly Line from Heathrow is the answer 95% of the time. Yes it is slow. Yes it is crowded. But it costs 5.50 and gets you to central London. The Heathrow Express is a luxury tax for impatient people.

The RER B from CDG is reliable but can be confusing the first time. The platform signage is not great and there are express and local trains. Make sure you take the one that stops at your station. Citymapper makes this much easier.

Amsterdam Schiphol to Centraal in 15 minutes for under 5 euros is insane. American airports should be embarrassed. LaGuardia to Midtown Manhattan takes 90 minutes and costs more. The infrastructure gap is real.

The coordinated arrival strategy works beautifully. Our exchange group had a WhatsApp thread for flight times and we matched arrivals to share taxis. Four people splitting a 45 euro taxi from Barcelona airport to the university area paid 11 euros each.

Berlin Brandenburg airport transfer for 3.80 euros is Europe's best kept secret. And the FEX train is clean, fast, and empty compared to most airport connections. Germany does public transit to airports right.

One thing worth adding for London: if you arrive at Stansted after midnight, the National Express night bus runs all night to Liverpool Street and Victoria for about 10 GBP. The train stops but the bus does not.

The offline address tip saved me in Rome when my data roaming did not activate immediately after landing. Had the address screenshot saved and showed it to the bus driver. Always have an offline backup.

Worth noting that the Elizabeth Line from Heathrow is now a strong middle option. Faster than Piccadilly, cheaper than Heathrow Express, and the trains are brand new. Check if it serves a station near your accommodation.

We now send this type of airport transfer information as part of our pre-departure packet. The number of students who take a 70 dollar taxi on their first day because they did not research alternatives is still too high.
