I just completed a two-week cross-country Amtrak trip using the USA Rail Pass and student discounts. Total cost for transport: $399 plus about $80 in reservation fees. Sharing my complete breakdown of how Amtrak pricing works, which routes are worth it, and where the train beats flying for students.

The California Zephyr recommendation is spot on. I took it from Denver to Emeryville last summer and the Glenwood Canyon section was genuinely one of the most beautiful things I have seen. The observation car was packed but everyone was quiet and just watching. Absolutely worth the time investment if you have it.

Worth mentioning the Wolverine route from Chicago to Detroit/Pontiac for Michigan students. It is only 5 hours, costs $25-$45 with student discount, and runs three times daily. Way better than driving through Indiana and dealing with Chicago traffic. I use it every time I visit home.

As someone from the UK where train travel is the default, Amtrak is a completely different experience. The scale is mind-blowing -- a single route covers more distance than the entire British rail network. The downside is frequency: one train per day on most long-distance routes versus hourly services in the UK. Plan around that constraint and it is fantastic.

The Northeast Regional is genuinely the best way between New York and Boston. I have done it probably 15 times now and it beats flying every time when you count door-to-door. Pro tip: the quiet car (usually car 4 or 5) has enforced silence rules. Perfect for studying during the ride.

One additional tip: Amtrak has a rewards program (Guest Rewards) that is free to join. You earn points on every trip and the redemption rates are actually reasonable -- I have earned two free Boston-New York trips from normal travel over two semesters. It costs nothing to sign up so there is no reason not to.

The Amtrak Cascades also runs from Vancouver BC to Seattle. It is the cheapest way to cross the US-Canada border on the west coast -- about $40 CAD one way with advance booking. Border control happens on the train at the station in Blaine, Washington. Much less stressful than driving across.

For Canadians: the Maple Leaf route from Toronto to New York (12.5 hours, $60-$100 USD) is an underrated option. You cross the border at Niagara Falls with views of the falls from the train. The time is long but it drops you at Penn Station in the middle of Manhattan. Try that with a flight to JFK plus transit.

Great addition to our transport guides Jake. Train travel in the US is one of the topics our English-speaking readers ask about most, and the practical booking strategies here fill a real gap. The USA Rail Pass comparison with individual tickets is particularly helpful for students planning multi-city spring break or summer trips.
