Just finished the best semester of my life in Berlin and spent less than I would have at my home university. Posting the complete budget breakdown because Berlin is genuinely the best value major city in Europe for students and more people should know about it. Everything from finding a WG to surviving Berghain queues on a budget.

The Semesterticket is genuinely the best deal in European student travel. I used it to visit Potsdam, Oranienburg (Sachsenhausen memorial), and the Spreewald multiple times -- all free with the student card. Nobody mentions this enough.

As an American: the no-tuition thing still blows my mind. I paid $0 in tuition for a semester at TU Berlin. Zero. My entire semester cost less than one month of tuition at my home university. The US higher education system is broken.

The WG search is no joke. Applied to about 40 listings before getting a room in Wedding. Start early, write in German, and be flexible on neighborhood. Anything within the Ring (S-Bahn circle) is fine for getting around.

Coming from London, Berlin felt almost free. My monthly budget in Berlin was less than my rent alone in London. The food prices especially -- a proper sit-down meal for 12 EUR that would cost 25 GBP in Shoreditch.

The Deutschlandticket tip is great. I got it in addition to my Semesterticket and took weekend trips to Hamburg and Leipzig for just the 49 EUR monthly cost. Regional trains are slow but perfectly fine for weekend adventures.

Berghain at 12 EUR entry with 4 EUR beers inside is the best value nightlife experience I have ever had anywhere in the world. Just be prepared to wait in line for two hours and possibly get rejected. It is part of the experience.

The Mensa tip is essential. I ate lunch at the Mensa almost every day for 3.50 EUR and it was genuinely good food. Pasta, salad bar, hot main course, dessert. You cannot cook for yourself at that price even buying from Aldi.

Canadian doing a year at FU Berlin here. The health insurance situation is actually better than what I had in Ontario. 120 EUR/month covers everything including mental health and dental. I am considering staying for a masters purely because of this.

One thing to add: Berlin is very English-friendly but learning basic German makes everything cheaper. Local shops, markets, and services are priced lower than the tourist-facing equivalents and speaking German gets you access to the local pricing layer.

The Ryanair tip from BER is gold. I flew to Lisbon for 29 EUR and Barcelona for 35 EUR during my semester. Berlin as a base for European weekend trips is unbeatable when you combine cheap flights with the Semesterticket getting you to the airport for free.
