I tested every budgeting app I could find during my semester in Prague. Three stood out for completely different reasons. Sharing my full breakdown with real numbers from five months abroad. If you have questions about any of them, ask away!

Recommending this to every student in my next pre-departure orientation. The real numbers from Prague are exactly the kind of evidence students need to take budgeting seriously before they leave.

I used Trail Wallet exclusively in Korea and can confirm the manual entry fatigue. By month four I was only logging purchases over $5. YNAB's bank sync would have caught the rest. Switching for my next trip.

Splitwise saved my group of four from so many arguments in Thailand. We had 200+ shared expenses over two months and settled everything with three Venmo transfers at the end. The app paid for itself in avoided conflict.

The behavioral insight at the end is backed by solid research. Kahneman's work on mental accounting shows that simply categorizing expenses changes spending behavior. YNAB essentially operationalizes that finding.

YNAB student discount is a game changer. Free for the entire school year with a .edu email. I set it up before flying to Berlin and had my categories dialed in by day three. Genuinely the first time I have ever stuck with a budget.

In West Africa the multi-currency support was critical. CFA francs, euros in transit countries, dollars from my scholarship disbursement. Trail Wallet handled it cleanly but I wish I had known about the YNAB student deal earlier.

The 5-8% missed expenses in Trail Wallet matches my experience exactly. Small contactless payments are the ones you forget to log. After month two I started photographing every receipt as a backup -- tedious but effective.

Splitwise Pro is worth it if your group is larger than four. The percentage-based splitting is essential for shared flats where people have different-sized rooms and should pay proportionally. Free tier cannot handle that.
