Just finished a semester at UCT in Cape Town. It was the most intense and rewarding experience of my life but I went in with almost no real information. Posting everything I wish I had known about safety, money, neighborhoods, and the academic system. Questions welcome, especially from anyone considering South Africa.

The safety section is the most honest I have seen for Cape Town. Every other article either scares you into not going or pretends there are no issues. This is the balanced version students actually need.

Uber in Cape Town is a game changer. Three dollar rides across the city at night. Combined with the MyCiTi bus during the day you genuinely do not need a car for anything except weekend trips.

The academic system description is accurate. Coming from an Irish university with continuous assessment, the South African exam-heavy system was a shock. Study groups are essential because the self-directed reading load is enormous.

I did my exchange at UCT last year and the monthly cost breakdown is spot on. My total spending including flights was about $6,500 for four months. Try doing that in London or Paris. The value is incredible.

The point about taking a South African history course is important. I know people who went to Cape Town and stayed in the international student bubble the whole time. They missed the entire point of being there.

Stellenbosch deserves more attention as an alternative to UCT. Smaller town, walkable, genuinely beautiful campus. The wine region location means weekend activities are right on your doorstep without needing to plan major trips.

Load shedding is real and annoying but manageable. Get a good power bank, download content for offline viewing, and treat the scheduled outages as forced breaks from screens. Most accommodations near UCT have backup systems now.

We are seeing a significant increase in students requesting South Africa over traditional European destinations. The combination of affordability, English instruction, and cultural immersion is driving the shift. This article will go into our pre-departure reading list.
