After eight years advising study abroad students I have handled everything from hospitalizations to natural disasters to lost passports at 3 AM. The students who had the right contacts saved on their phone got help faster every single time. Posting the complete list that should be on every student's phone before they board their flight.

The Medical ID feature saved a friend of mine in Barcelona. She had an allergic reaction at a restaurant and the paramedics checked her phone immediately. Her drug allergies were listed and they adjusted treatment accordingly. Set this up today.

112 working across all of Europe including on locked phones is the kind of information that should be printed on every boarding pass to Europe. I had no idea until I moved to the UK that it works alongside 999.

The regular check-in system is underrated. My mom and I have a standing Sunday evening text. When I missed it once in Vietnam because of bad signal she started the call chain. Annoying at the time but the system works exactly as designed.

As someone studying medicine: the drug allergy information in Medical ID is genuinely critical. If you are unconscious and they administer a medication you are allergic to, the consequences can be severe. This is not optional information to have accessible.

STEP registration took me ten minutes and I received three security alerts during my semester in South Africa. Each one gave me specific, actionable information about protests or safety concerns near my area. The system works and there is zero reason not to register.

The secondary emergency contact point is smart. My primary contact is my mother in London but when she was traveling herself during my semester in Tokyo the secondary contact (my older brother) handled a visa question I needed sorted urgently.

For Canadian students the +1 613 996 8885 number accepts collect calls which matters when you are abroad with no credit on your phone. I had to use it once for a passport issue and they were responsive and helpful.

In South Korea the emergency number is 119 for medical and fire, 112 for police. The 119 operators often have English interpretation available if you state your language clearly at the start of the call. Learned this the hard way.

The program provider emergency line is genuinely important. When I had a medical issue in Rome at 2 AM, calling the CIEE on-site coordinator was faster than figuring out the Italian hospital system alone. They sent someone to the hospital within an hour.

The location sharing tip is good but make sure you use a platform that works internationally. WhatsApp live location works globally. Apple Find My requires both parties to have Apple devices. Google Maps sharing works cross-platform.
