Just got back from 3 weeks in Europe and the Eurail pass debate was real. I ran the numbers before I went and decided to go point-to-point. Saved about $250 vs the pass because I booked everything 6 weeks out. BUT my friend who went spontaneous with a Eurail pass had so many unplanned adventures I kind of regretted it. Cost ≠ value, apparently.

Seat 61 is the BIBLE for European rail. The man has breakdown tables for every route. I basically planned my whole Italy trip from that site.

The night train point is underrated. Vienna to Hamburg on the Nightjet with a couchette reservation was €19 + the Eurail activation. That's €19 for both transport and a bed. Nothing beats that math.

Trainline and Omio are key for advance booking. I found Paris-Berlin for €24 in advance which basically invalidated the Eurail case for that leg immediately.

Agreed on all counts. I think the sweet spot is: buy Eurail if you have max 3 weeks and want zero planning stress. Do point-to-point if you're organised and value savings over spontaneity.

Switzerland specifically is where the Eurail pass shines — the Swiss Travel Pass is basically the same price and Swiss rail is expensive if booked point-to-point. Mountain trains, boats, everything is covered.
