Just wrapped up 11 months in New Zealand on a Working Holiday Visa. Picked kiwifruit, bungee jumped, drove from Cape Reinga to Bluff, and somehow came home with more savings than I left with. Here is the honest version of how it works.

The van-sharing tip is absolutely key. I bought a Toyota HiAce with another backpacker for 5,500 NZD, we split everything 50/50, and sold it eleven months later for 4,200 NZD. Net cost: 650 NZD each for a year of accommodation and transport.

The 23-month extension for Canadians is incredible. I did my three months picking apples in Hawke's Bay and now have a full second year. Nobody told me about this before I left Canada. More people need to know.

For French citizens the process is basically the same but the visa is called PVT (Programme Vacances-Travail). The cap is 12,000 per year and it fills up faster than the American one. Apply early in the cycle if you are French.

The 4,200 NZD proof of funds requirement is lower than I expected. Had been assuming I needed 10k+ saved to even consider this. The chest X-ray for US citizens is an odd requirement but apparently straightforward. Filling out the application this week.

Ski season work in Wanaka was the best four months of my life. Cardrona and Treble Cone both hire international staff every year. Free lift pass, subsidized accommodation, and you ski every day. Apply by March for the June start.

Important note for American students: a gap year in NZ does not have to mean skipping a year of college. Several US universities offer credit-bearing semester programs in NZ that can run concurrently with WHV work during breaks.

The kiwifruit picking is genuinely hard work. You are on your feet for 8-10 hours in the sun. But the money is real -- I cleared 900 NZD per week after tax and accommodation. Three months of that funds a lot of travel.

Having done both countries, NZ is smaller and easier to cover in one year. Australia needs two years minimum to see properly. NZ is also safer, cheaper for activities, and the people are noticeably friendlier. Both are excellent but NZ edges it for a first gap year.

The tax refund section is important. I got 1,200 NZD back because my total earnings were under the higher bracket threshold. File the IR3 before you leave or within the tax year. It is free money you already earned.
