Solo female traveler here — just finished 6 weeks across 4 countries staying almost exclusively in hostels. Sharing everything I learned about staying safe without being paranoid, because most advice I found online was either too vague or too scary. This is the practical version.

The point about reading reviews filtered by women is something I tell every solo female traveler I meet. The aggregate score misses so much. Comments from other women are the actual data you need.

HI hostels are genuinely underrated. Slightly pricier but the atmosphere is reliably calm and the staff are trained and professional. Worth the extra few dollars for the consistency.

The bSafe timer function saved me from a panicked parent situation when my phone died and I missed check-in. They could see my last known location. Get the app before you need it.

Female dorms in Southeast Asia are often indistinguishable in price from mixed dorms and are far more comfortable. In Europe the $3-5 premium is absolutely worth it. Never stayed in a mixed dorm since discovering this.

The cable lock for your backpack tip is excellent. I add a small luggage tag with just my email address (no home address). If lost it can be returned; if stolen the thief has less personal info.

Wanted to add: when you share your location, set an end time for the share rather than leaving it open-ended. This creates a natural check-in moment when the share expires and keeps the system active without being indefinite.

The part about connecting with other solo female travelers in the hostel in the first hours is key. I've traveled 40+ countries solo and my best hostel memories are from these spontaneous connections. Be proactive about it.
