I saved $5,200 in 10 months on a part-time campus job salary. No trust fund, no parental bailout. Sharing the exact breakdown of what worked and what did not, including the months where I almost quit. If I can do it, you can too.

The Gilman Scholarship section is critical. I got $4,500 from Gilman alone and it changed everything. If you receive Pell Grants you are automatically eligible. The application essay takes work but the payoff is massive.

The separate savings account tip is underrated. I kept my abroad fund in the same checking account for months and kept dipping into it. Moving it to a separate bank completely stopped the leakage.

Tutoring was my highest-paying gig in college. $30 an hour for organic chemistry tutoring and I had more demand than I could handle. If you are good at a hard subject, start advertising at your campus tutoring center.

The winter break acceleration strategy is real. I worked at a department store for four weeks in December and made $2,100 after taxes. That single month covered almost half my savings goal.

Exchange rate timing matters too. I converted my savings to GBP in three batches over two months instead of all at once and saved about $180 by catching a favorable rate on one of the conversions.

Selling textbooks and old electronics generated $380 for me. Not life-changing but it covered my visa application fees and vaccinations. Every small amount matters when you are building toward a number.

The food section is honest. I stopped ordering delivery completely during my saving period and cooked every meal. My monthly food spend dropped from 280 pounds to about 120. That difference alone was significant.
