After six years advising study abroad students, mental health is the issue I see most often and the one students are least prepared for. Compiling every resource I recommend to my students into one place. If you are struggling abroad, you are not alone and help exists in every country.

The W-curve description is so accurate it hurts. My week 11 in Seoul was the lowest point of my entire exchange. Knowing it was a predictable phase would have helped enormously. I thought something was wrong with me.

BetterHelp with the student discount was 35 dollars per week during my semester in Prague. The time zone issue was real -- my therapist was in Ohio so our sessions were at 8 PM her time, 2 AM mine. We switched to async messaging and it worked well.

Oxford's counseling service gave me six sessions within two weeks of my first request. Not every UK university is this fast but the service quality was genuinely excellent. Exchange students are eligible for the same support as full-time students.

I called the Canadian 988 line from Berlin during a particularly bad night. They stayed on the phone for 45 minutes. The line works internationally if you have wifi calling. It saved me from a very dark place and I am not embarrassed to say that.

Pinning this for every pre-departure orientation from now on. The medication section is critical -- I had a student whose ADHD medication was classified as a controlled substance in Japan and was confiscated at customs. Research this before you fly.

Woebot got me through some genuinely rough weeks in Southeast Asia where I had no access to English-speaking therapists. It is not therapy but the daily CBT exercises kept me functional until I could talk to someone properly.

BAPU in Lyon was free and I got an appointment within 10 days. The counselor spoke some English which helped since my French was still developing. Exchange students absolutely have access to this -- do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

Samaritans at 116 123 is genuinely one of the best crisis services anywhere. They do not judge, they do not rush you, and they are there at 3 AM when everything feels impossible. I called twice during my year in London and both times it helped immediately.

The 'one in three' statistic at the top is actually conservative. Recent studies from the Journal of American College Health put it closer to 40% for symptoms of clinically significant anxiety or depression during study abroad. This needs more attention.

Headspace student plan at 9.99 per year is genuinely the best mental health investment I made. Ten minutes of guided meditation before bed improved my sleep within a week and that cascade effect improved everything else. Not a cure but a solid foundation.
