Just finished a 12-day Southwest loop with my roommate — Zion, Bryce, Arches, Grand Canyon. Total cost per person was under $700 including flights. The America the Beautiful pass is the single best travel purchase I've ever made. AMA!

The timed entry permits for Arches catch so many people off guard. Book it the same day you buy the America the Beautiful pass, seriously. They go fast.

Congaree is so underrated!! I told everyone about the synchronous fireflies and nobody believed me until they saw it. Late May is magical.

FreeCampsites.net changed my life. We camped for free 7 out of 10 nights on our Utah trip. Just check fire restrictions — some areas are closed in dry summer months.

Altitude sickness is real — I felt rough the first day at Rocky Mountain. Drink extra water, go slow, and don't attempt big hikes on day one at elevation.

Check your campus outdoor center before buying anything. My university rents sleeping bags, tents, bear canisters, everything. Saved about $300 in gear costs.

Did the Southwest loop solo last fall and it was one of the best decisions of my life. The parks are safe for solo travelers. Just tell people your plans and download offline maps.
