I spent two semesters abroad during my undergrad at UBC and funded almost all of it through scholarships. The information is scattered across dozens of websites so I compiled everything into one place. Provincial grants vary wildly -- some provinces are generous, others barely exist. Happy to help anyone navigate the application process!

The Killam Fellowship tip is huge. I had no idea it existed until my advisor mentioned it in passing. Applied last fall and got it for my exchange to Georgetown. Covers basically everything for a full year in the US.

As someone who works in a university international office, the point about visiting both the international office AND financial aid is critical. We maintain completely separate databases and students who only check one are missing half the picture.

The bilateral exchange point saved me thousands. Paid McGill tuition instead of University of Melbourne international fees. The difference was about CAD 12,000 for one semester. Always check if your university has a direct exchange agreement.

Interesting to compare this with UK funding. Turing Scheme covers British students going abroad but the per-student amounts are smaller. Canadian students seem to have more stacking options if they do the research.

Quebec students have a huge advantage with the France-Quebec fee waiver agreements. I paid Quebec tuition rates at a French university. Combined with a Quebec mobility bursary, my semester in Paris cost less than staying in Montreal.

Reading this as an American and realizing that Canadian provincial funding is a whole layer of support we do not have at the state level in most US states. The Quebec model sounds incredibly generous.

The Mitacs Globalink program is underrated. Got a 16-week research placement in Dublin through it and they covered flights plus a solid living stipend. The application goes through your supervisor which makes it faster than most external scholarships.

The stacking strategy works on both sides of the border. I combined Gilman plus FEA plus my university grant for my semester in Senegal. Canadian students should absolutely apply to everything they qualify for. The marginal effort per application is tiny once your base documents are ready.
