Just got back from Puerto Rico with 5 friends and we each spent under $500 for 5 nights including flights. Posting the full breakdown because I'm tired of seeing people spend $1500+ on Cancun packages when there are way better options. Ask me anything!

Puerto Rico is so underrated for spring break. No passport, no exchange rate, food is amazing and affordable. Did it sophomore year and it was 10x better than Cancun the year before.

The Outer Banks tip is legit. Did it in late March with 8 people, rented a house for $700 for the week split 8 ways. Beaches were almost empty. Would repeat every year.

The point about booking flights individually for groups is one I've never heard before but makes total sense. Airline group pricing is a trap. Sharing this with my friend group immediately.

South Padre Island from Austin is a 5-hour drive. Gas for 4 people round trip is like $60. It's not glamorous but it's legitimately a good beach with way less crowds than Florida.

To answer several DMs: yes, we used Splitwise the whole trip and it saved friendships. Log every coffee, every grocery run. Settling up at the end when nobody remembers who paid for what is a disaster.
