Just finished my first month in Edinburgh after the most chaotic first week of my life. Sharing everything I wish someone had told me before I landed — especially the part about culture shock that nobody warns you about in the pre-departure info sessions. Questions welcome!

The part about orientation social events is so true. I almost skipped the first evening because I was exhausted. Pushed through and met my two closest friends from the whole semester right there. Go even when tired.

The frustration phase of culture shock hit me at exactly week 4 in London. I thought I was just not suited for living abroad. Knowing it's a documented pattern would have saved me a lot of anxiety.

Revolut was a lifesaver for me in Boston. Had it set up before I flew. Saved probably $200 in fees over the semester. Highly recommend setting it up at home where the verification is easier.

The concrete plans vs vague intentions point for making friends — this is the actual advice. 'We should hang out' means nothing. 'Are you free Saturday morning for a walk?' gets things done.

Wanted to add: download offline Google Maps for your city before you land. First day you'll be navigating with low data, jet-lagged, and potentially in rain. Offline maps are not optional.

Embassy registration took me 8 minutes. Never thought I'd need it. Then there were protests near my campus and my parents were calling in a panic. The STEP program sent me a safety alert automatically. Do it.
