I almost cancelled my Interrail trip two days before departure because of anxiety — palpitations, couldn't sleep, convinced something terrible would happen. Went anyway. Three weeks, twelve countries, some of the best experiences of my life. If you're in the 'almost cancelling' phase right now, this thread is for you.

I was physically shaking at the airport for my first solo trip. Three days in I was completely fine. The anticipation is the hardest part. Every time.

The point about physical basics is so true. My worst travel day was when I'd slept four hours and hadn't eaten a proper meal in two days. Ate a real meal, slept eight hours, completely different trip.

Setting up the communication protocol with my mum before leaving was the thing that made the whole trip possible. She knew when to expect messages. I knew I wasn't worrying her. Everyone relaxed.

Hostels genuinely saved me from loneliness on my first solo trip. The dorm room introduction thing works. Every time. Nobody is going to turn down a friendly hello when they're also traveling alone.

Worth adding: the Crisis Text Line and Samaritans are for everyone, not just crisis situations. If you're struggling mid-trip and need to talk, these services exist for that too.

The affective forecasting point is gold. We are genuinely bad at predicting how hard things will be. The trip in your head is almost always scarier than the actual trip.
