Just got back from six weeks in Ghana with a volunteer program and I'm trying to process what I actually contributed vs what was just... tourism with extra steps. Anyone else wrestled with this? Happy to share what I found useful in vetting the program before I went.

The orphanage tourism expose changed how I think about this completely. I almost booked one in Nepal. Please research this before anyone books anything with children.

Workaway saved me so much money in Portugal — I worked at a farm hostel for four hours a day and had a private room and meals. Genuinely fair exchange.

The skill mismatch point is the one I keep coming back to. What was I actually contributing that a local person couldn't do better and cheaper? That question should come before any booking.

My development studies professor told us the most ethical thing most students can do is donate the program fee to a vetted local NGO and save the flight emissions. Harsh but probably true for one-week programs.

Projects Abroad medical placement was worth it for me as a pre-med student. I was supervised by actual doctors, it was structured, and I learned a ton. But I'd never recommend the 'community' programs.

UN Online Volunteering is completely free, you use actual skills, and you get a verified certificate. No flight, no program fee. I've done three projects and it actually looks better on grad school apps than voluntourism.
