Just finished my 12-month working holiday in Australia and tracked every dollar I earned and spent. Sharing the full breakdown because most WHV content online is either unrealistically optimistic or totally vague. Real numbers from a real year. Ask me anything about the 417 visa experience.

Canadian here, did my WHV in 2024. Scenario B is extremely accurate for me. Worked 9 months across Melbourne hospo and Bundaberg farm work, traveled for 3 months, came home with about AUD $11,000 in savings. The tax refund added another $1,800 that I was not expecting.

The car cost is the hidden killer. Bought a 2006 Camry for $3,500, spent $900 on repairs over 6 months, sold it for $2,200. Net loss of $2,200 on the car alone. Factor this into your budget if you are doing regional work.

Mango picking in the NT was the highest-earning month of my life. Made AUD $6,200 in 4 weeks of piece-rate work. But it was also the most physically demanding thing I have ever done. Your hands look like they went through a war zone.

Important warning about farm work hostels: some charge AUD $250/week for a bed in a 10-person dorm and then restrict which farms you can work at. They take a cut from the farm too. Research the accommodation before you commit to a region.

The 15% tax rate is actually quite reasonable compared to what I was paying working summer jobs in Michigan. And if you file your own return through myTax the process is genuinely simple. Do not pay a commission to those tax refund companies.

For anyone considering the saver scenario: I worked 11 months straight in Melbourne (hospitality + event staffing) and saved AUD $22,000. It is absolutely doable but you need to be disciplined about social spending. Melbourne has way too many good bars and restaurants.

Irish lad here. The WHV age limit was extended to 35 for Irish passport holders which is a massive advantage. Did mine at 28 with actual work experience and earned significantly more than the fresh graduates around me. If you have skills, bring them.

The Harvest Trail website is genuinely useful. Found my cherry picking job in Tasmania through it and the farm was legitimate, paid correctly, and counted toward my 88 days. Do not rely on Facebook groups for farm work leads -- too many scams.

One thing to add: if you are American, you still need to file US taxes on your worldwide income. The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion covers most of it but you need to file. Use TurboTax or a CPA who handles expat returns. Do not ignore this.
